Thoughts on the day....

Today, we're exploring our thoughts about September 11th. David is 10 and was 5 months old that day. Connor and Brennen... well, they're firmly in the post-9/11 generation.

Me: David, what do you know about 9/11?
David: Ummmm. Many people died, many firefighters. When they were cleaning out the Twin Towers--the square that the towers left, they found a tree--they called it the survivor tree.
Me: How do you feel about what happened on 9/11?
David: Huh. I don't know. Sad and scared. Scared that it could happen again, that more people could die.
Me: What do you think we should do to stop it from happening again?
David: I don't know. Maybe putting a concrete wall around it with a tunnel right to the other door. Then when the planes run into it, the cement will fall off just a little bit. Or they could put like a bomb protection around everything.

Me: Connor, what do you know about 9/11?
Connor (meanly, still upset about Brennen stealing and hiding one of his toys): It was a plane crash. A terrorist attack.
Me: How do you feel about it?
Connor: BAD.
Me: Are you scared?
Connor: No.
Me: Why not?
Connor: I don't know.
Me: Any ideas to stop it from happening again?
Connor: That thing they built around it.
[We've been watching  "Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero" on the Discovery Channel--you should check it out]

Me: Brennen, what do you know about 9/11?
Brennen (upset at being falsely accused of stealing Connor's toy): I don't want to talk about it.
Me: Why not?
Brennen: Because.
Me: Are you scared?
Brennen: No.
Me: Why don't you want to talk about it?
Brennen: Because.
Me (after waiting for Brennen to get into a better mood): Anything else you want to say?
Brennen: No... wait! The bad guys took over the planes.
Me: Why aren't you scared?
Brennen: Because! I'm going in the war, and I'll just [mimes shooting them all with machine guns].
[At  Brennen's kindergarten graduation, he said he wanted to be an "Army Guy" *sigh*]

There you have it, folks. Life goes on. Children will always have more important things to talk about than a decade-old tragedy. Thank goodness.

Brennen on Jerry

[It's Father's Day, and Mom has decreed that any blog written today shall be about Daddy.]

Robin: What do you want to say about Daddy?
This picture is a few years old, obviously.
Brennen: I don't know.
R: What do you like doing with Daddy?
B: Um, playing.
David: Playing what?
B: I don't know the name.
R: What does it look like?
B: Um... [taps his fingers on Robin's face]
R: Tickling?
B: [Nods]
D: What do you like to do the most with Daddy?
B: I want to type!
R: You can't even spell.
B: You can tell me what letters to push!
R: This is lots faster.
D: What do you like doing most with Dad?
B: I know! Hauling wood!
R: What do you do when you haul wood?
D: Hike til Dad says load the trailer.
B: Hike.
R: Do you help Daddy load the trailer?
B: I give [the wood] up [to Dave in the trailer]
R: What else do you love about Daddy?
B: Um, I love hauling wood with him. I mean, hunting with him.
R: What do you like most about hunting?
B: [After prompted by David] Um, seeing dead stuff.
R: Okay, is that it?
B: Um, fishing with Dad.
R: What do you like about fishing?
D: You keep stealing my questions!
B: We catch fish.
R: Why do you like catching fish?
B: Because I see blooood!
D: Do you like bike riding with Daddy?
B: Bike riding with Dad!
R: Do you like bike riding with Mommy, too?
B: [overlooking the fact that mommy has only accompanied the family on ONE bike ride] Yup!
D: Do you like ice fishing with Daddy? I mean skiing with Daddy?
B: Yeah! Going skiing with with Daddy!
R: Okay. Are we done?
B: Um, yeah. Wait!
...
R: What, Brennen?
B: Um.... Going to the park with Daddy.
R: Okay, is that it?
B: Yeah.

Brennen's Blusterings re: Christmas

Technically, Brennen has declined the honor of blogging this week, since his mean mommy won't let him blog "all by [him]self," as "the other boys got to." When mommy asked him if he could spell or type, he suggested that mommy point out each and every key he should press for each letter he wanted to write. Sadly, his mother is not that cool. Or patient. Or nice.

Good thing mommy had planned for a series of pictures, anyway.

Wow! We have so many presents! And they're so big!!

This Christmas was a How to Train Your Dragon theme. Sans DVD. We saw it in 3D Imax (thanks Grandma Ambrose!), but haven't purchased the DVD yet. Maybe next Christmas....

Dragon Wars 2010. Connor isn't doing so hot.

Ah.....

Brennen says: Merry Christmas!

The Boys

Okay, so Jerry and I aren't that interesting, so I thought I'd start with the boys.

David is turning 7 tomorrow (shoot--I'm getting old!) and is in 1st Grade. He's learning how to read and loves recess best! He wants everyone to know that he likes school.

Connor will turn 5 this summer and will start kindergarten in the fall. He wants everyone to know that he loves football. Connor and David have both memorized all 13 Articles of Faith.

Brennen will turn 3 this summer and still doesn't like to talk. He gets by with grunting, pointing, and that ultra-expressive face of his! He can say partial words (Mommy: I love you! Brennen: Oooo!) but can't be bothered with most of the English language.

Together, they're three little terrors, but we love them!
